Jiangsu Garment Factories Employ “Sweat” Child Laborers: Low Wages, Long Working Hours, Abused, Not Paid Until the End of the Year.

Jiangsu Province is known as “Chinese clothing capital”, but behind its impressive garment production volume, there is a supply line of living and breathing child laborers!

The Mainland media’s investigations have discovered that the children are deceived from provinces, such as Yunnan, into Jiangsu, and then are “sold” to the garment factories as child laborers.

Child laborers work long hours in the factories with extremely low wages and are paid only once a year. If they leave before the end of year, then they won’t be paid single penny. If someone attempts to “job-hop” (work for another factory), then he will be beaten up and his cellphone and identification card will be seized.

In Jiangsu’s Changshu Garment City, almost every household is a processing factory, the numbers are recorded in thousands.

In order to lower the cost, the factories will try to hire rural children workers with low wages. Then a middleman will go to Yunnan area, and deceive children to Jiangsu, charging the factories thousands Yuan as a “reference fee”, therefore selling children the processing factories.

According to inside sources, there are usually about 20 workers per factory, and at least 5 to 6 of them are children.

Our source states that most factories organize their production process into an “assembly line”: each person only processes one step. Therefore, it doesn’t matter if it’s an expert or a novice worker, because the products are always the same. However an experienced worker’s monthly salary is 5000-6000 Yuan, but a novice may be paid even less 2000 Yuan; therefore hiring a novice can greatly reduce the costs.

It’s known that some children live a very dark life. They work at least 28 days in a 30 days month, for 16 or more continuous hours, and if they cannot finish the work, they will have to work overtime till the early morning.

A 15 years old boy, Xiao Xiong, states that he began working in the garment processing plant since he was 13 years old. In the first few days, they were off work every night at 8:30 pm, but since the production volume has increased from 350 pieces to 720 pieces over the years, he now has to work overtime.

Xiaoxiong thought that the processing work wouldn’t be very tiring because they won’t work under the sun, but soon he discovered that it is a very exhausting job.

Factories also took many measurements to prevent employees from “job-hopping”, such as not paying until the end of the year; even if the laborer has worked for over half a year, he will not be paid a cent; requesting a refund for the “reference fees” if laborer doesn’t work for enough hours.

In addition, some boss will hold on to the laborers’ identification cards. Once the laborer was suspected to “Job-hop”, the employer will seize the employees’ bankcards and cell phone, and beat the laborer. They even claimed  “They’ll work faster after a beating. “
